Thimbles
The most common way of manufacturing wire rope slings is with ferrules and loops at both ends. The loops of the wire rope sling are the contact point between the lifted load and the sling itself. When more structural strength is needed in the contact point of the wire rope sling, the use of a metal thimble is recommended.
This is so, because while using normal loops, the possibility of injuring the sling is significantly higher than while using reinforced loops with metal thimbles. When there is no thimble, the wire rope sling loop sometimes bends under the load and that may lead to faster wear out of the sling itself. The thimble helps the loop to keep its initial and original curve.
The thimble also protects the strands of the wire rope sling from injuries and wear outs. When using thimbles actually the lifted load has no traction with the surface of the wire rope.
Bottom line, we can say that the use of thimbles assures significantly longer exploitation life of the steel wire rope sling.
Mainly, there are two types of thimbles used in the EU.
